The Beauty Of VoIP Phone Services

The realm of communications has gone trough a lot of changes in the past five years. From Bluetooth, Wireless Fidelity, GPRS, GPS, personal digital assistants, and smartphones, these communication technology advances and more have become more and more heard of, being used by everyone living in 2008.

With the rate technology is growing, providing users with convenience benefits, another popular technologies now in play takes shape with VoIP, with various communication entities providing VoIP services to subscribers.

Just what is VoIP and why is it getting around so much?

Voice over Internet Protocol

At its most core, VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol and is simply a communications protocol designed to facilitate the transmission of voice streams through packet switched networks or over the Internet. This means that with VoIP, people could take and make phone calls over the internet, aside from the usual web surfing and downloading they do. The beauty with VoIP is that since it operates with and through the internet, there are certain “traditional phone call” limitations which VoIP isn’t limited to, like expensive long distance bills, for example. Another would take shape with data transmissions, negating the need for fax machines.

Though mentioned as if it’s a latest discovery, VoIP has been around long, even dating to the days when networks first came to be. It is only in recent years when its practical application, along with the ideal of technologies, providing VoIP with the most ideal of operation conditions, came to be, making VoIP today’s communication superstar.

Types of VoIP

To date, there are two known types of VoIP services, taking shape with the access numbers type and the Direct Inward Dialing, or DID, type. Access numbers call for the input of the actual extension number of the VoIP subscriber, while Direct Inward Dialing allows callers to call a VoIP subscriber, directly.

Regardless of which type is being talked about, the “sec
ret” behind VoIP’s successful operation takes shape with it being a protocol where telephony signals are carries a digital audio, then encapsulated in a data packet stream over IP. Audio or speech data technologies allow for the more enhanced compression of digital audio, allowing for faster data rate transfers and such.

Generally VoIP to VoIP phone calls could be stated as free. VoIP calls to public switched telephone networks or PSTN are known to be those which cost, but free classes are known to be up and about.

VoIP Phone Services

VoIP is also known as Broadband Phone, Broadband Telephony, Internet Telephony, IP Telephony, or Voice over Broadband, and is marketed under those names by those which provide VoIP services to subscribers. VoIP phone service providers are commercial realizations of the Network Voice Protocol, which has been an experiment since 1973. Given the nature of VoIP, most VoIP service providers offer internet connectivity packages, or are internet service providers which have add-on VoIP offers for subscribers.

Vonage would be one of the world’s most popular VoIP service providers, and is known to pride itself as “Vonage the Broadband Phone Company”. The company has completed over five billion VoIP Calls, and has expanded from the United Sates to the United Kingdom and to Canada. Its name is basically a play with “voice over net age”.

Comcast, a popular internet service provider, is another popular VoIP service provider, giving subscribers the benefits of going online, at the same time making and taking calls through that same internet service connection.

VoIP Phone Services range from providing subscribers with computer software, or soft phones, to providing subscribers with actual phones which connect via VoIP technology. VoIP service benefits could include the capacity to send and/or receive file attachments, along with other internet network data transfer protocols.

Bottom line, VoIP is all about making calls through the internet. As how email had changed the world of Postal Services, VoIP is now well on its way in revolutionizing the telecommunications industry, setting up newer standards, which all in all provide subscribers with the technology’s benefits.
